Management of HSP is mostly supportive and includes bed rest, hydration, analgesia and monitoring for abdominal and renal complications.
Recent studies have shown that there is potential benefit if steroids are given early in the course of HSP in preventing the early and late complications. These include:
- Shortens the duration and severity of abdominal symptoms
- Decrease the rate of relapse of HSP
- Decrease the incidence of HSP nephritis
- Prevent the development of long term complications of renal disease
A dose of prednisolone 1mg/kg daily for 2 weeks have been suggested by the studies.
