Coeliac disease is a genetically determined autoimmune disorder. It affects people differently, when it presents in childhood it is  usually associated with gastrointestinal symptoms. Antibodies are produced against proteins known as gluten contained in wheat (including spelt, tricale, and kamut) rye and barley which then cause damage to the small intestinal lining.  It is a lifelong disorder and is treated by a gluten free diet.
